FAQs

What is a pediatric neuropsychologist?

According to the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology, pediatric neuropsychologists are licensed psychologists who have training in both clinical psychology and neuropsychology. They have special training in how the brain develops and use this training to evaluate and help manage children with brain disorders. Such disorders may involve brain injury, medical disease, or developmental concerns. Pediatric neuropsychologists help parents, teachers, and physicians to:

  • Understand how problems with the brain may relate to problems seen at school, home, or with peers
  • Understand how a child learns best
  • Understand why a child may have behavior problems
  • Help a child deal with thinking or behavior problems
  • Identify neurological or psychiatric problems
  • Help match expectations to a child’s specific strengths and weaknesses
  • Work with other doctors and teachers to develop the best treatment and school plan for a child

What does the evaluation process involve?

The process will begin with you, the parent/guardian or patient, completing a comprehensive background form that helps Dr. Medlin better understand you or your child. At the initial appointment, Dr. Medlin asks that you bring all report cards, IEP, 504 plans, medical records, and prior evaluations. During the appointment, she will conduct a comprehensive interview which will include a detailed review of you or your child’s life from conception to present. Dr. Medlin will review development, mood concerns, family history, medical history, academic history, and behaviors. She will then complete a comprehensive assessment with you or your child to address areas of concern. A second appointment will occur after the initial evaluation to review test results, diagnoses, and recommendations. A comprehensive report will then be provided to share with the child’s school and additional providers working with you or your child.

How long does an evaluation take?

The assessment process varies from 1-6 hours depending on the type of evaluation required. The evaluation may by conducted over 1 or more testing sessions depending on the type of evaluation/evaluations being completed.

Should I or my child take prescribed medication(s) the day of the evaluation?

Yes, please! Take all medications as prescribed by you or your child’s physician.

What should I bring to the evaluation?

Please bring IEP, 504 plan, prescription lenses, hearing aids, medical records, and prior evaluations with you to the evaluation. It is also recommended you bring a snack and drink for you or your child during the assessment.
